Is Profound Worth the Premium? A Buyer's Cost-Benefit Check for 2026

Profound has no published brand price, a $1.8B valuation, and an enterprise-heavy pitch. Here is how to work out what it really costs, what the premium buys, and when a cheaper platform does the same job.

Key takeaways

  • Profound has no published brand price between a free 7-day trial and custom Enterprise. Third-party reviews put Enterprise at roughly $2,000+ a month, but I could not verify that figure on Profound's own site.
  • Agencies can self-serve at $99 a month plus $399 per client workspace, according to a Strategi review. That per-client number is the one that scales, so model it first.
  • The premium buys breadth: up to nine engines, an agent layer (AI Marketer), Agent Analytics, SOC 2, SSO and white-glove support. It makes the most sense for large brands with a dedicated AEO owner.
  • Tracking alone is not the expensive part. Acting on the data (content, earned mentions, technical fixes) usually costs more than the license.
  • If you mostly need monitoring plus execution at a lower price, several alternatives cover the same ground. Run the cost-per-answer math before you sign.

The short version

Profound is the best-funded company in AI visibility. Per Strategi, it announced a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation on September 15, 2026, co-led by Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins, after a $96 million Series C earlier in the year (Ryze AI). It says it serves more than 1,000 enterprise brands and over a third of the Fortune 100.

Money does not make a tool right for you, though. The honest question is narrower: does the extra spend change what AI engines say about your brand, enough to beat a cheaper tool plus the same budget spent on content? That is what this guide helps you test.

What Profound actually costs in 2026

Profound's pricing has changed more than once this year, so check the date on any review you read (including this one). Here is what the sources say.

What Profound's own pricing page shows

I could confirm two brand options on the official pricing page, and no dollar amounts:

  • Trial (free): 50 prompts run daily for 7 days across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, one language, one region. The prompt set is chosen by industry and cannot be customized. No history, exports, API, SSO or support. Only five prompt-volume searches.
  • Enterprise (custom): daily tracking on a tailored prompt plan, up to nine engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Exa Search), ChatGPT Shopping, all-time history, CSV and JSON exports, API, SSO/SAML, SOC 2, custom languages and regions, unlimited seats, and unlimited Agent Analytics domains.

There is no middle tier for brands. You go from a one-week sandbox to a sales conversation.

What third-party reviews report

These numbers come from reviewers, not from Profound's page, so treat them as directional:

  • Agency Growth at $99 a month plus $399 a month for each client workspace, with 400 agent credits a month per workspace (Strategi).
  • A Starter to Growth jump of $99 to $399 with nothing in between, annual-only self-serve billing, and engine coverage that rises from one engine at the entry level to three at $399 and up to nine on Enterprise (Ryze AI).
  • Enterprise at $2,000+ a month, described by AI Growth Agent and Maintouch as the threshold where the tool makes sense for teams with a dedicated AEO owner.

Because these sources disagree on tiers and dates, get any quote in writing and confirm which engines, prompts, regions and credits it includes.

What the premium buys you

Strip away the marketing and there are five things you are paying extra for.

  1. Engine breadth. Nine engines on Enterprise versus one to three on lower tiers. If your buyers use Copilot or DeepSeek, this matters. If they live in ChatGPT and Google, it matters much less.
  2. An agent layer. Profound now calls itself an AI Marketer: agents that read your brand data, analyze answers, and assign work to sub-agents for research, drafting and reporting. Agents run on credits, and complex ones burn more of them.
  3. Agent Analytics. Server-side visibility into AI crawler behavior, with integrations for Akamai, AWS, Cloudflare, Fastly, Netlify, Vercel and WordPress.
  4. Enterprise controls. SSO/SAML, SOC 2, exports, API, and support options up to a dedicated specialist with a 24-hour SLA.
  5. Credibility in the boardroom. This one is real. A Fortune 500 procurement team often prefers the market leader. You are partly paying for a safe signature.

One limit worth noting from Ryze AI's review: none of it reaches your live site on its own. A person still publishes every change.

The costs the invoice does not show

Tracking is the cheap part. Here is why, using Promptwatch's own data.

In Promptwatch Data's analysis of unique domains per ChatGPT response (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), 47.6% of responses cited 10 or more domains and 66.1% cited at least eight. Only 6% cited three or fewer. For organic prompts, 52.5% cited 10 or more.

That is a crowded answer. Your brand competes with review sites, listicles, forums and docs for a slot, so a dashboard telling you that you are at position seven does not move you to position three. Content, earned mentions and technical fixes do. Budget for them separately:

  • Writers or an agent credit pool to produce content for the gaps
  • Digital PR or outreach to get named on pages AI already cites
  • Developer time to fix crawler access and page structure
  • An owner inside your company who reads the data weekly

Maintouch asks the right question: what is the real cost of using Profound once you factor in what it takes to act on the data? Run that number against alternatives before you sign.

Also check how a vendor handles query fan-outs. Promptwatch's fan-out data shows average ChatGPT searches per response fell from 2.15 in early December to about 1.84 by early March, and query length shrank sharply over the same period. Tracked prompts map to short, keyword-like searches, so ask any vendor to show you the actual fan-outs behind each answer.

A cost-benefit worksheet

Before a demo, fill this in. It takes twenty minutes and saves a bad contract.

Step 1: Count what you really need to track

  • How many prompts? Write the number down, not "a lot."
  • Which engines do your buyers actually use? Check your analytics referrals first.
  • Which countries and languages?
  • How many brands or client workspaces?

Step 2: Price the action layer

  • How many articles or page updates per month will you ship?
  • Who writes and publishes them, and what do they cost today?
  • How many agent credits does that consume, and what happens on overage? Profound lets you either continue with overage billing or pause at the allotment. Negotiate that up front.

Step 3: Compute cost per answer

Honeyb publishes a figure for its own product of about $0.008 per answer (100 prompts across 8 engines for 30 days, $199). Profound does not publish an equivalent for brands. Ask for a written quote and divide it by prompts x engines x days. It is a blunt measure but it makes tools comparable.

Step 4: Decide how you will measure results

Use first-party data: server logs, analytics referrals from AI engines, and conversions. Strategi, which has used Profound itself, calls AI visibility tools nice to have rather than must have, and does not rely on them for exact measurement. I think that is a healthy attitude. Any dashboard score is a proxy.

Who should buy Profound

Profound earns the premium when most of these are true:

  • You are a large brand with a dedicated AEO or GEO owner.
  • A budget of $2,000+ a month clears without a special meeting.
  • You need SOC 2, SSO, a named support contact and board-ready reporting.
  • You want coverage of nine engines, ChatGPT Shopping and agent-driven content workflows in one vendor.
  • Your procurement team wants the category leader on the vendor list.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Small and mid-size teams that mostly need to know who ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name, and what to fix. A trial that cannot be customized and a custom quote are poor fits.
  • Agencies with many small clients. At $399 per client workspace, ten clients is $3,990 a month before the base fee. Model that against flat-priced agency plans.
  • Teams that want a published price. If you need to budget before talking to sales, you will not get that here for brands.
  • Buyers who want the fix, not just the finding. Ask exactly how the agent output gets live on your site.

Alternatives worth pricing against

I did not verify competitor pricing for this guide, so check each vendor's pricing page. Here is how the options differ in approach.

Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the option I would price first if your reason for considering Profound is the agent layer. It publishes its plans (Essential at $95 a month, Professional at $245, Business at $579, with agency plans from $199), and it goes past tracking: it monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and others, shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, ties AI visits to conversions, and has a Content Agent that plans, writes and publishes to Webflow, Framer or WordPress. It is also ISO/IEC 27001 certified and GDPR compliant, which helps with security reviews. Confirm current prices at promptwatch.com/pricing.

Questions to ask in the Profound demo

  1. What is the all-in annual price for my prompt count, engines, regions and workspaces, in writing?
  2. How many agent credits are included, and what does a typical article or report consume?
  3. What happens on overage, and can I cap it?
  4. Is the prompt set customizable on my plan, or recommended by industry only?
  5. Do you track real user interfaces or API outputs for each engine? Answers and citations can differ between them.
  6. How do you show query fan-outs behind each tracked answer?
  7. Can the agents publish to my CMS, or does a person do it?
  8. Is the price locked for the contract term, given that it has changed more than once in 2026?
  9. Can I export everything (CSV, JSON, API) if I leave?

My take

Profound is a serious product with a serious price, and for a Fortune 500 team with a dedicated owner it is a defensible pick. For everyone else, the premium is hard to justify before you have proven that AI visibility work moves revenue. Start with a cheaper tool or the free trial, prove the channel with your own traffic data, and put the larger share of budget into the content and mentions that change what AI says about you. Upgrade if you outgrow it, not before.

To see where you stand before spending anything, Promptwatch's Data hub has current citation benchmarks for your industry, and a free visibility scan from any vendor beats a purchase made on faith.
