Semrush vs Ahrefs Brand Radar vs SE Ranking for AI Overview Tracking in 2026

Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar and SE Ranking all claim to track Google AI Overviews. Here is how they differ on pricing, prompt limits, coverage and data, plus what none of them do.

Key takeaways

  • SE Ranking is the cheapest way in. Its Core plan is $129/mo with 100 AI prompts tracked daily, and it names AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar has the biggest prompt database and the widest engine coverage, but it is a paid add-on starting at $199/mo per AI index, or $699/mo for all six.
  • Semrush puts AI metrics next to classic SEO data. The standalone toolkit is $99/mo per domain, while the Semrush One bundles start at $199/mo.
  • Prices and plan limits in this space changed repeatedly in 2026. Check each vendor's pricing page before you buy.
  • All three are SEO suites with AI tracking added on. If you want to know what to fix and whether the fix worked, you may need a dedicated GEO platform too.

What you are actually buying

Google AI Overviews tracking sounds like one feature. It is really three questions. Does an AI Overview appear for my keywords? Is my brand mentioned in it? Is my site linked as a source?

The three tools answer these differently. Semrush and Ahrefs lean on large prompt databases and show you visibility across many prompts you did not pick. SE Ranking leans on prompts you choose, checked daily. Neither approach is wrong. They suit different jobs: discovery versus monitoring.

One caveat before we start. I found no independent accuracy test of these three tools, and several of the comparison articles online are written by vendors who sell competing products. Treat any ranking, including mine, as a starting point and run a trial against 20 or so prompts you already know the answer to.

Semrush's pitch is integration. In Domain Overview, AI metrics such as visibility score, mentions and cited pages sit next to authority score, organic traffic, keywords and backlinks. If your reporting already lives in Semrush, that matters more than it sounds. You do not have to stitch two exports together to explain why organic traffic dipped while AI visibility rose.

Pricing and limits

The standalone AI Visibility Toolkit is $99/mo per domain, billed annually. It includes one project and one domain for Brand Performance with 25 tracked prompts, 300 daily AI Analysis queries, 1,000 daily Prompt Research queries and AI Search Checks in Site Audit for up to 100 pages. Extra users and extra domains or locations each cost $99.

The bundled route is Semrush One. Starter gives you 5 websites, 50 prompts and 500 keywords. Pro+ gives 15 websites, 100 prompts and 1,500 keywords. Advanced gives 40 websites, 200 prompts and 5,000 keywords. One reviewer listed Starter at $199/mo and Pro+ at $299/mo.

Where it is weaker

Two things made me wary. First, RankScope (which sells a competing product, so weigh that) reports that Semrush's own pages list supported engines in at least four different ways, and that Google AI Overviews is not clearly named on the pricing page. Ask support to confirm AIO coverage in writing before you pay. Second, Exploding Topics reports the visibility charts update monthly with US and UK regional data, while prompt tracking is daily. For a market outside those regions, that is a real limit.

On the plus side, Semrush includes sentiment tracking and competitive gap analysis, which Ahrefs currently does not emphasize.

Brand Radar is the research tool of the three. It sits on a prompt database that Ahrefs' pricing page puts at 516M+ organic prompts, and it lets you compare your brand against up to 20 competitors, see which domains AI systems cite most, and find which brands own a topic. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Style Factory's roundup says it is the only tool there tracking Copilot and Grok. YouTube, TikTok and Reddit tracking is free while in beta for Ahrefs customers.

The cost

This is where it hurts. Brand Radar is sold separately from the base Ahrefs plans (Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449 per month). The add-on is $199/mo per AI index or $699/mo for all six. One reviewer's all-in totals came to roughly $828/mo with Lite, $948 with Standard and $1,148 with Advanced. Custom prompt packages run $50 and $100 per month, with overage at $0.020 per check.

A competitor's review (Profound, so biased) points out that Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cost the same per index as ChatGPT, even though the Google prompt data is far larger. I have not independently confirmed that, but it is worth asking about. The same review claims there is no free trial and that video tracking costs an extra $199/mo, and also quotes a $99/mo ChatGPT-only option that conflicts with the $199 figure. Verify all of it on the live page.

Who it fits

Brand Radar is strongest for competitive discovery and citation-source analysis. Arobis's comparison reaches the same conclusion: Ahrefs for large-scale research, Semrush for specialized AI optimization with sentiment. If you only want to watch 50 prompts, you are paying for a database you will barely touch.

SE Ranking is the value pick, though it is no longer the bargain it was. The Core + GEO plan is $129/mo ($103.20/mo billed annually) and includes 2,000 keywords, 100 AI prompts tracked daily and 10 projects. Arboreal Marketing, an agency that uses it (and is an affiliate, so note that), points to more projects in the lowest tier than Semrush or Ahrefs offer, plus an MCP integration for Claude.

The AI Results Tracker can show mention presence, link presence and visibility across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. SE Visible extends coverage to Gemini and Perplexity. It can also flag keywords that trigger AI Overviews and offer recommendations. Rankings can be tracked by location, device and search engine with daily updates.

Trade-offs

The datasets are smaller: 25.5M AI prompts and 31M domains seen in AI-generated results. That is plenty for a defined client list, but it is not a discovery engine. An earlier Exploding Topics review noted that SE Ranking requires manually chosen prompts, which makes it less suited to finding prompts you had not thought of. RankScope rates its share of voice as basic. An older pricing structure put competitor analysis behind a separate AI Search add-on, so confirm what is included in the plan you pick.

What to look for in AI Overview tracking

AI Overviews citations are shifting, and your tool should show it. Promptwatch Data shows YouTube reached 4.16% of all AI Overview citations in June 2026 (month-to-date), with Reddit at 2.72% and google.com at 2.30%, all 2026 highs. See the Google AI Overview citation share report for June 2026. Partial-month numbers can overstate momentum, but the direction is clear: if your tracker cannot show YouTube, Reddit and Google-owned pages as cited sources, you will miss a growing share of the answer.

Format matters too. In Promptwatch's July 2026 AI Overviews content type data, listicles made up 18.0% of citations, product pages 16.3% and how-tos 15.1%. Product pages became the most cited format every day from July 28. Listicles averaged about 26% in Q1, so the mix moved a lot in a few months. A tool that only tells you "you were cited" without showing the cited page and its type leaves you guessing what to publish.

A short checklist when you trial any of them:

  • Does it confirm an AI Overview was actually shown, per keyword and location?
  • Does it show the cited URLs, not just a brand mention?
  • Can it distinguish a mention from a link?
  • How often does it refresh, and in which countries?
  • How many prompts can you track before pricing jumps?

I did not verify AIO-specific features like trigger detection per keyword, screenshot capture or citation-level URL data across all three, so test those directly.

Also keep in mind the reviewers' verdicts, which are not unanimous. Arboreal Marketing found all three very similar and preferred SE Ranking for the clarity of its data, with Ahrefs close behind. Style Factory called Ahrefs the choice for the largest dataset and SE Ranking the best balance of features, limits and price.

What none of the three do well

All three are SEO suites that added AI tracking. They tell you where you appear. They are lighter on the next step: why a page is not cited, whether AI crawlers can even read it, and whether the page you just rewrote earned a citation.

If that gap matters, a dedicated GEO platform fills it. Promptwatch tracks the real interfaces of Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and others, adds IP-verified AI crawler logs and AI traffic analytics, and has a Content Agent that writes and publishes against the gaps it finds. It is not a classic SERP rank tracker, so many teams keep an SEO suite alongside it.

Other options in the same space include [tool:peec-ai], [tool:profound] and [tool:otterly-ai]. For a broader list of options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com and the rank tracker directory at ai-rank-tools.com are good places to compare.

A practical way to decide

  1. Write down 30 prompts and keywords you care about, including 10 where you know an AI Overview appears.
  2. Trial the tool or ask for a demo using those exact prompts.
  3. Compare what it reports against what you see by hand in a clean browser.
  4. Check the price at your real prompt volume, not the headline number.
  5. Ask the vendor in writing which engines and regions are covered.

If the tool misses obvious AI Overviews or cannot show which URL was cited, drop it, whatever the brand name. And before any annual commitment, re-check the pricing page. In 2026, plans for all three moved enough that a review from six months ago is already out of date.
