Gauge Review 2026

Gauge is a Y Combinator-backed GEO analytics platform that tracks brand visibility at the individual prompt level across ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot.

Key takeaways

  • Gauge is a YC-backed GEO platform with an unusually strong dev-tool customer base (PostHog, Supabase, Braintrust, Resend) and case studies with real numbers attached, like PostHog growing LLM-referred traffic 41x.
  • It pairs monitoring with a content engine and the Ask Gauge agent, but it lacks several capabilities Promptwatch includes: Reddit and YouTube citation tracking, ChatGPT Shopping insights, prompt difficulty scoring, query fan-outs, and multi-region tracking on the base plan.
  • Pricing starts at $599/month with no free tier, and Claude and Grok monitoring is gated behind Enterprise or your own API keys.
  • The separate Gauge Agents product, which tests whether coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor can actually implement your tool, is genuinely original. Nobody else in this market does that.
  • Best fit: dev-tool and B2B SaaS marketing teams that want a high-touch GEO partner and can justify the spend. Weak fit: agencies and multi-region brands.

What Gauge actually does

Gauge tracks brand visibility at the individual prompt level across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Claude and Grok are available too, but on the Growth plan they require your own API keys, per Gauge's own comparison page, with full access reserved for Enterprise. Prompts run daily, and the Growth plan's 600 prompts work out to 108,000 tracked answers per month.

Two claims here are worth taking seriously. Gauge pulls real user interface data rather than generic API responses, which matters because user-facing answers and citations genuinely differ from what APIs return. And it researches actual search intent and real use cases instead of defaulting to "best X" prompt lists, which is where a lot of lazy GEO tools stop.

The feature set covers prompt tracking, brand coverage, gap analysis, competitor analysis, citation analysis, and a useful distinction between mention rate (how often you're named) and citation rate (how often your site is linked). There's also an audit tool for owned properties and an action center with concrete recommendations.

Founded in 2024 by Caelean Barnes and Evan Doyle out of Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch, Gauge runs on roughly five people in San Francisco. That shows up in both directions. Customers praise the "builds with us, not at us" approach and fast turnaround on bespoke features, with one Product Hunt reviewer citing one to two days. The flip side: a thin independent review base (two Product Hunt reviews, no G2 or Capterra presence I could find) and some navigational UX rough edges that reviewers flagged.

Ask Gauge and the content engine

Ask Gauge is the conversational analyst. It reads your AI visibility data alongside GA4, Search Console, DataForSEO, and PostHog product data, then tells you what to write. LedgerUp's team credited it directly: "It analyzed our data, found our gaps, and recommended exactly what to write. We barely had to spend time on the platform." An early Product Hunt review called Ask Gauge a black box with no export or API access at the time. Both exports and an API now appear in the feature list, so that complaint appears addressed.

The content engine produces 18 publish-ready articles per month on Growth and pushes them to Webflow, Framer, Sanity, or GitHub. GitHub as a publishing target is a dev-tool tell. Most GEO platforms, Promptwatch included, stop at WordPress, Webflow, and Framer. If your blog lives in a repo or a headless CMS, Gauge fits your stack better than most.

Gauge Agents is the interesting part

In August 2026, Gauge launched what it calls Agent Led Growth, and it's the most original thing the company does. The premise: coding agents now decide which tools get installed, and if Claude Code doesn't pick your library, you're invisible to the developers building with it.

Gauge Agents runs real coding sessions across Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor against real repositories, judges each run against your success criteria, and shows where agents succeed or get stuck. It measures which tools agents recommend and install, which competitors win instead, and which docs shaped the decision. The docs experiment feature is the clever bit: replay a failed session from the moment the agent read your docs, change only the page copy, and see which rewrite gets the integration right.

It's priced separately, from $100/month (1,500 credits) up to $20,000/month, with typical costs of $3-4 per eval or 50-75 cents per Agent Preference run. Promptwatch approaches the same shift from the visibility side, tracking whether your brand gets cited in Claude Code and OpenCode answers. Gauge tests the implementation side. For a dev-tool company both questions matter, and only Gauge answers the second one.

Pricing

Growth is $599/month: 600 prompts, 108,000 answers, six platforms, 18 articles, 10 seats, unlimited domains and competitors, GA4, Search Console, and DataForSEO integrations, CMS publishing, Slack, exports, and email plus Slack support. There's a 1-week free trial and no free tier. Enterprise is custom, and unlocks Claude and Grok fully, multiple locations, MCP access, and recurring strategy sessions with the Gauge team.

For context, Promptwatch's Professional plan at $245/month includes 150 prompts, 18,000 responses, 15 generated articles, state and city-level tracking, shopping insights, and 25M crawler logs, with a free tier underneath that. Gauge's per-answer cost at volume is actually reasonable. The problem is there's no cheap way in, and single-location tracking on a $599 plan stings.

The case studies, taken with salt

The marketing leans hard on case studies, and to their credit, they're specific. PostHog grew LLM-referred traffic 41x and became the most-cited domain in its space. Braintrust went from 2.5% to 45% answer share. Sanctum climbed from 16.7% to 47.5% visibility in six months. LedgerUp jumped from 1% to 17% in under four weeks. Standard Metrics doubled answer share in two weeks.

These are self-reported, and Gauge's own FAQ says results are "contingent on the implementation and execution of the recommendations." Translation: this is a high-touch product where the team works alongside you, and the outcomes reflect that model as much as the software. Not a knock. Just know you're buying service plus software, not a self-serve dashboard.

Strengths

  • Real UI data with daily refresh across six platforms
  • A content engine that closes the loop from insight to published article, with GitHub and Sanity support most competitors lack
  • Ask Gauge agent with unlimited chats on Growth
  • AI crawler monitoring through Cloudflare and Vercel
  • OpenAI Ads and Meta Ads integrations, plus a ChatGPT Ads intelligence layer launched in April 2026
  • Sentiment tracking, added April 2026
  • S3 export for data lake pushes, API access, MCP on Enterprise
  • Gauge Agents, a product no one else in this market has
  • A customer list (PostHog, Supabase, Braintrust, Resend, Mintlify) that matches its target market

Limitations, and where Promptwatch pulls ahead

  • No dedicated Reddit or YouTube citation analytics. Promptwatch has separate reports for both, and Reddit drives a huge share of AI citations.
  • No ChatGPT Shopping tracking. Gauge has ads intelligence, but product recommendation tracking isn't in its feature list.
  • No published prompt volume and difficulty scoring or query fan-outs. Promptwatch scores difficulty per prompt and maps how AI expands prompts into sub-queries.
  • Single location on Growth. Promptwatch tracks countries, states, and cities.
  • Crawler monitoring covers Cloudflare and Vercel only. Promptwatch ingests logs from Cloudflare, CloudFront, Fastly, Vercel, Netlify, Akamai, Google Cloud CDN, and custom endpoints.
  • No native visitor analytics; you're wiring up GA4 yourself. Promptwatch tracks AI traffic and conversions out of the box.
  • No agency tier, white-label dashboard, or client portal.
  • No free plan, and a $599 entry price that's more than six times Promptwatch's Essential plan.
  • Claude and Grok gated behind Enterprise or your own API keys.
  • A review base of two Product Hunt reviews. Promptwatch has 1,840+ customers and a 4.7/5 rating on G2.

Who should use Gauge

The sweet spot is a dev-tool or B2B SaaS marketing team of two to ten people selling to AI-native buyers, one that wants an opinionated partner rather than a dashboard and has $599+ per month budgeted. The PostHog and Braintrust stories are the profile. Crypto and fintech challenger brands (Sanctum, Eco, LedgerUp) show up repeatedly in their results too.

Skip it if you're an agency that needs white-label reporting, a brand requiring multi-region tracking from day one, or a small team for whom $599/month is a stretch. A lean startup gets more capability per dollar from Promptwatch's $95 Essential plan, or its free tier.

Bottom line

Gauge is a real product with real customers and one feature nobody else has. The monitoring-to-content loop works, the team is technical, and the case-study numbers are more specific than most of the market bothers to be. But the toolkit has gaps that matter in practice: no Reddit or YouTube citation tracking, no shopping insights, no prompt difficulty data, single-location tracking, and a $599 floor with no free tier. For teams that want the complete stack, crawler logs across seven CDNs, native AI traffic attribution, and multi-region coverage at a lower entry price, Promptwatch is the stronger choice. For dev-tool companies, Gauge Agents alone justifies a conversation, and the GEO platform attached to it is solid enough to grow into.
