Key takeaways
- "AI rank tracker" means two different things in 2026: classic keyword trackers that added AI Overview and chatbot checks, and GEO platforms built around prompts and citations. Pick the category before you pick the tool.
- Model coverage varies a lot. Some tools check one or two engines, others 8 to 17. Entry plans often limit you to three models or make Claude and AI Mode paid extras.
- Accuracy in AI tracking is about method, not a single position number. Prompts get sampled, answers change per run, and API outputs can differ from what users see in the real interface.
- Entry prices run from about $29 to $295 a month for the AI-native tools. Always confirm on the vendor's pricing page, because these change often.
- Tracking alone does not grow anything. If you want the fix handled too, look for content gap analysis, crawler logs and publishing built in.
What an AI rank tracker actually measures
A classic rank tracker gives you a number: position 4 for a keyword. An AI rank tracker can't honestly do that. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews generate a different answer depending on the user, location, device and the minute you ask. So the useful metrics are different: how often your brand is mentioned across repeated runs, where you land in the answer, which URLs get cited, and how that compares to competitors.
There's also a structural point that makes cross-engine comparisons shaky. According to Promptwatch Data on average sources per response, ChatGPT cites about 5 sources per web-search answer, Google AI Overviews about 10, and Perplexity almost exactly 10 every day. Copilot swung from under 2 to nearly 17 within a few weeks. A visibility score of 40% on one engine simply doesn't mean the same thing as 40% on another.
The fan-out problem matters too. ChatGPT runs its own sub-searches for each prompt, and Promptwatch's query fanout data shows the number and length of those queries moved around a lot between December 2025 and April 2026. A tracker that shows you those sub-queries tells you more than one that only reports the final answer.
How we compared these tools
I looked at three things, and I'd suggest you do the same when you trial anything:
- Models covered: which engines are checked, and whether Google AI Mode, Claude, Copilot and Gemini come in the base plan or as add-ons.
- Accuracy and method: real interface scraping versus API calls, how often prompts run, and whether you can see the actual answer and cited URLs as proof.
- Price per useful unit: entry price, but also what that buys in prompts, responses or credits.
Pricing below comes from vendor pages as reported in third-party roundups from August to October 2026 (Technova Partners, Honeyb, Omnia, SE Visible). Several of those are vendors or have their own agenda, so treat their rankings with care and verify numbers yourself.

Tracking and fixing: the one tool that does both
Promptwatch
Promptwatch is where I'd start if you want more than a dashboard. It monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Meta AI and Alexa in each country and language, and tracks API models like Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok alongside. That distinction matters: user-facing answers can differ from API outputs.
What separates it from pure trackers is what happens after you find a gap. Content gap analysis shows which prompts you're missing, the Content Agent can write and publish to WordPress, Webflow or Framer, and IP-verified crawler logs show whether AI bots even read your pages. Visibility Score, Share of Voice, position and sentiment sit together, so you can tell a coverage problem from a prominence problem.
Pricing starts with a free Explore plan (ChatGPT only, 10 prompts), then Essential at $95/mo for 50 prompts and all models, Professional at $245/mo and Business at $579/mo. Agency plans start at $199/mo. Confirm on promptwatch.com/pricing.

If you want to compare more options in this category, the GEO software directory lists many of them.
Classic rank trackers that added AI
SE Ranking and SE Visible
SE Ranking scored highest in Technova's August 2026 comparison (23.5 out of 25), mainly on price. The Core plan is EUR 109/month for 2,000 daily-tracked keywords, with 100 daily AI prompt checks covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Another roundup describes the AI add-on at $89/mo, so check which packaging applies when you sign up. The standalone SE Visible product starts around $99 to $189/mo depending on the source.

AccuRanker
A pure tracker with unlimited on-demand refreshes and excellent city-level data. It starts at $224/month for 2,000 keywords, roughly double SE Ranking, and there's no audit or backlink data. The AccuLLM add-on (about $229/mo in one roundup) covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Mode. Looker Studio and API access reportedly need the $764/mo Expert plan, which is a steep gate.
The AI Rank Trackers worth AccuRanker's price are teams who already report on it for classic rankings and want AI as a side column.
Nightwatch
Tracks over 100,000 locations down to ZIP code and includes AI Overview tracking on every plan, from EUR 79/month for 500 keywords. Deeper Citation Intelligence starts at EUR 159. It has a 4.9/5 G2 rating across 43 reviews according to one roundup, the highest accuracy score in that comparison. For local agencies it's hard to beat.

Semrush
The SEO plan at $139/month includes AI search tracking, with bigger prompt quotas (50 tracked prompts a day, 300 daily visibility reports) from the $199 Starter tier. At around $0.28 per tracked keyword it's the most expensive way to track plain rankings in Technova's list. You pay for the suite. If you already use it, the AI features are a convenient bonus.
Ahrefs Brand Radar
Brand Radar covers ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, and its strength is market-wide benchmarks from a large index. The catch is that Ahrefs Lite at $129/mo only gives you 5 tracked AI prompts, and the Brand Radar index starts at $199/mo, rising to $699 for all models. Custom prompts are sold in check packages and there's no free trial.

AI-native trackers
Peec AI
Starter is $95/mo for 50 prompts, Pro $245 for 150, Advanced $495 for 350, each tracking three models daily with unlimited users. You pick three from ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI, while Perplexity is an add-on and Claude is Enterprise only. The three-model cap is the thing to weigh.
Otterly.AI
The budget entry point at $29/mo. AI Overviews are included, while AI Mode, Gemini and Claude cost extra. Good for a small site that just wants to see if it shows up at all.

Rankscale
Credit-based. Pro is $99/mo for 1,200 credits (up to 4,800 AI answers) with a 7-day trial, Pro+ $229 adds the REST API, Growth $385, Enterprise $780. It claims 17+ engines, the widest in this list. Omnia's roundup notes credit use varies with tracking frequency and the product leans toward monitoring rather than execution.
AthenaHQ
A free plan with 300 credits, then Starter at $295/mo for 3,600 credits across 11 models (one credit per AI response). Extra credits and API access cost more. It's the priciest entry point here apart from enterprise contracts.
Profound
Enterprise-oriented, with a free trial and then custom pricing, and up to 9 engines on Enterprise. If procurement wants a contract and a sales call, Profound and AthenaHQ are the ones that sell that way.
ZipTie
Focused tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and AI Overviews, with Bing's AI answers included, from about $43/mo. Suits teams who prefer paying per check.
Accuracy: what to test before you pay
Nobody can promise you an exact position inside an AI answer. What you can check is method.
- Real interface or API? Ask whether the tool collects what a user sees. Promptwatch and a few others scrape real interfaces; many cheaper tools use API calls, which can return different answers and citations.
- Can you see the evidence? Look for stored answer text and extracted cited URLs per run. A bare score with no answer behind it is hard to audit.
- How many runs? Because answers vary, a single daily sample is noisy. Judge trends over weeks, not day-to-day jitters.
- Location and language. If you sell locally, check geo targeting. Nightwatch is strong on ZIP-level classic rankings, and Promptwatch can pin monitors to exact coordinates on higher plans.
- What the data means per engine. Back to the citation-slot point above: compare yourself against competitors on the same engine, not a score against another engine.
Also keep an eye on how fast the ground moves. Promptwatch's data on Reddit citations shows reddit.com's share of ChatGPT citations falling from about 4% to 0.5% on August 14, 2026. A tracker that updates daily catches changes like that. A weekly tool might show you the cliff days late.
Price comparison by budget
| Budget | Sensible pick | What you get | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $50/mo | Otterly.AI, ZipTie | Basic mention tracking | Fewer engines, little action guidance |
| $50 to $150/mo | Promptwatch Essential, Peec AI, Rankscale Pro, SE Ranking | Real coverage across several engines | Peec limits you to 3 models; Rankscale leans monitoring |
| $150 to $300/mo | Promptwatch Professional, AccuRanker + AccuLLM, AthenaHQ Starter | More prompts, deeper data | Higher cost per answer for some |
| $300+ | Promptwatch Business, Profound, Rankscale Growth | Automation, local targeting, enterprise features | Needs a team to use it |
For the classic-versus-AI trade-off: if you track 2,000 keywords and want some AI checks, SE Ranking gives the best value in the sources I reviewed. If AI search is the main goal, an AI-native tool serves you better.
Which one should you pick?
- You want to track and then fix: Promptwatch. Gap analysis, content creation and crawler logs sit in one place.
- You live in classic rankings and need AI as an extra: SE Ranking, or Nightwatch for local work.
- You already pay for a big suite: Semrush or Ahrefs, accepting shallower AI depth and tight prompt limits.
- You're on a tiny budget: Otterly.AI or the free Promptwatch Explore plan.
- You need many engines on credits: Rankscale.
- You need an enterprise contract: Profound or AthenaHQ.
My honest take: the cheap trackers answer "was I mentioned" and stop. That's fine for a first month. After that the question becomes what to do about it, and that's where most of this list runs out of road. For other options, browse the AI rank tracker directory before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need a classic rank tracker?
Probably yes. Google positions still drive traffic, and tools like SE Ranking, AccuRanker and Nightwatch do that job better than AI-native trackers. Many teams run one of each.
How many prompts do I need?
Start with 30 to 50 that reflect real buying questions, split between branded, competitor and category prompts. Add more after you see which topics matter.
Are the prices final?
No. Figures here come from vendor pages quoted in October 2026 roundups and some are from August. Check each pricing page, and watch whether annual billing, add-ons or credits change the real monthly cost.
