Key takeaways
- Surfer, Clearscope, Frase and NeuronWriter all do the same core job: compare your draft against ranking pages and score it. MarketMuse is different, it plans content across a whole site.
- Clearscope is the premium editor with unlimited users ($129/mo). NeuronWriter is the cheapest ($23/mo). Frase is the best all-in-one for research plus drafting ($39/mo yearly).
- Every one of them now sells AI-visibility tracking, but prompt limits vary a lot, so check the numbers before you buy.
- A higher content score does not guarantee rankings. Treat it as a checklist, not a goal.
- ChatGPT cites product pages and landing pages far more than blog articles, so these tools only cover part of what AI search rewards.
What these tools actually do
The pitch is simple. You type a target keyword. The tool pulls the pages that already rank, extracts the terms, headings and length they share, and hands you a score that rises as your draft matches. That is it. Everything else (briefs, AI writers, publishing, AI-visibility tracking) is layered on top.
I'll say up front that I'm skeptical of the score itself. A rising number feels good, but chasing it can produce text that reads like a committee wrote it. Ertiqah makes the same point in its Surfer alternatives guide: a better score and a page that earns rankings are not the same thing, and nobody has published tested proof either way. Use the tools to find gaps in coverage, then write for the reader.
Pricing below comes from each vendor's pricing page as scraped in October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm before buying.

| Frase | Research, brief, draft and publish in one place | $39/mo yearly ($49 monthly) | 1 on Starter, 3 on Professional | Tracked by model, more on higher tiers |
| NeuronWriter | Budget optimization | $23/mo ($230 yearly) | Unlimited from Gold | 5 questions included, add-on available |

Surfer SEO

Surfer is the one most people compare everything else against. The Content Editor builds guidelines from competing pages: terms to use, a word range, heading counts and a live Content Score. Around that it has a Topical Map for clusters, a Content Audit for refreshing old pages, a plagiarism check, an AI writing assistant, and AI search tracking for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features.
Pricing is where you need to be careful, because it is a mess across sources. The vendor page now leads with an AI Search Analytics plan at $82/mo billed yearly (50 daily prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and Perplexity). Standard is $99/mo billed yearly. Third-party roundups list Pro around $182 and Peace of Mind at $299, and say Standard is $119 on monthly billing, with about 360 documents a month and 3 seats. Older articles still quote $49 or $79, which no longer match the current page.
Who it suits: writers and agencies who want one number to aim at and a wider toolkit around the editor. Who should look elsewhere: anyone who just wants a cheap coverage check, or a team with lots of occasional contributors, since seats are limited.
Clearscope

Clearscope is the one serious content teams tend to name when they want the cleanest read on topic coverage. The report reads more like an editor's brief than a keyword-density meter. It surfaces the terms and concepts top pages share, grades your draft, and mostly stays out of the way. It integrates with Google Docs and WordPress.
The plans are straightforward:
- Essentials: $129/mo, 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Discoveries and 20 Drafts per month.
- Business: $399/mo, 300 tracked queries, 300 pages, 50 Discoveries, and a dedicated account manager.
- Enterprise: custom, with SSO and custom credits.
All plans include unlimited users and projects, a 14-day free trial and no contracts. That unlimited-user part changes the math for agencies and in-house teams with many freelancers. Extra pages cost $25/mo on Essentials. Clearscope also tracks queries across ChatGPT and Gemini and shows the query fan-out, meaning the web searches AI platforms trigger.
The tradeoff is cost and scope. It is not a full writing suite, so if you want drafting built in you will bolt something on. One Reddit snippet quotes $189/mo for Clearscope, which looks stale.
Frase
Frase starts a step earlier than Surfer. It pulls the top results for a query, summarizes what they cover, builds a brief, then scores your draft against the same set. It now describes itself as an agentic content operating system for AI search, and it publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, or to its own FraseCMS.
| Plan | Yearly (per month) | Monthly | Seats | Articles per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $39 | $49 | 1 | 10 |
| Professional | $103 | $129 | 3 | 40 |
| Scale | $239 | $299 | 5 | 100 |
Starter includes SEO and GEO scores and AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI, and stops at its limits rather than billing overage. Professional adds a content calendar, internal linking suggestions, AI crawler monitoring and Perplexity tracking. Scale adds Claude and Gemini tracking and client-ready reports. There is a 7-day trial with no card, and an MCP server on every plan.
It is less surgical than Clearscope on pure term coverage, and the AI drafts still need a real edit. But as the single tool that takes you from empty page to optimized draft, it is the best value here for solo marketers and small teams.
NeuronWriter

NeuronWriter gives you the core of what Surfer's editor does, NLP-based term recommendations from the live SERP, for a fraction of the price. The interface is denser and less polished. The guidance itself is legitimate.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Projects | Documents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | $23 | $230 | 2 | 25 |
| Silver | $45 | $450 | 5 | 50 |
| Gold | $69 | $690 | 10 | 75 |
| Platinum | $93 | $930 | 25 | 100 |
| Diamond | $117 | $1,170 | 50 | 150 |
Gold and above add unlimited team members, Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations, API and MCP access, and a bring-your-own OpenAI key. Bronze includes 5 AI-monitored questions, and an AI Monitoring add-on costs $9/mo for 10 more, covering Google, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. You get a 7-day trial and a 30-day refund on the first plan.
One correction: one roundup uses $19/mo for Bronze. The current page shows $23/mo or $230 a year. Over a year that is still the cheapest option on this list by a wide margin.
MarketMuse

MarketMuse is a different animal. Where the other four optimize a single draft, MarketMuse models topics across your whole site: what you already cover, where the gaps are, and what to write next. It says it uses a patented topic modeling approach rather than TF-IDF or correlation-based SEO. Its metrics include Personalized Difficulty (1-100), Topic Authority, Competitive Advantage and a topic-model Content Score.
Prices are not published. Every paid tier is "book a demo." The tiers look like this:
- Free: 1 user, 10 queries a month, no site inventory.
- Optimize: 1 site inventory, 100 tracked topics, 5 briefs a month.
- Research: 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics, 10 briefs, unlimited queries.
- Strategy: 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, 20 briefs, and all 9 brief types (article, comparison, FAQ collection, guide, how-to, listicle, local, news/event and product review).
That brief-type list is interesting, as you will see in a moment. MarketMuse makes sense for mature programs managing hundreds of interlinked pages. It is overkill if you publish a handful of posts a month and a manual competitor read still works.
What a year costs
Using the current list prices on yearly billing where available:
| Tool | Entry plan, one year |
|---|---|
| NeuronWriter Bronze | $230 |
| Frase Starter | $468 ($39 x 12) |
| Surfer Standard | $1,188 ($99 x 12) |
| Clearscope Essentials | $1,548 ($129 x 12) |
| MarketMuse | Quote required |
The number that matters is per person. Clearscope's unlimited users can beat Surfer's seat-limited plans once five or six people need access. For one freelancer, it never will.
What the AI citation data says about all of this
These tools mostly optimize editorial articles. But Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026 shows ChatGPT's citations skew elsewhere. Product pages were the most cited type at 22.4%, landing pages followed at 16.8%, listicles at 13.6%, how-tos at 8.7%, comparisons at 5.9% and news at 5.7%. For commercial prompts like "best CRM for small businesses," product pages, landing pages, listicles and comparisons made up almost 70% of citations.
I'm drawing an inference here, not quoting a claim from the tools or from Promptwatch: a perfect Surfer score on a blog post does little for you if your product page is thin. Pair article optimization with complete product pages, comparison pages and FAQ or docs. Also note that content ages differently. In Promptwatch's half-life data, news pages lost half their citations in about 36 days, while landing pages and docs kept most of theirs for months. That favors refreshing evergreen pages over chasing news.
All five tools now bolt on AI-visibility tracking, but prompt limits are small: 25-50 for Surfer, 50-300 for Clearscope, 5-20 for NeuronWriter. If AI search is a real channel for you, a dedicated platform like Promptwatch tracks far more prompts and adds crawler logs and content-gap analysis. The GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists more options.

How to choose
Start with how many pieces you optimize each month, how many people need access, and whether you want a writing assistant or a planning tool.
- Under five pieces a month, one writer: NeuronWriter, or Frase Starter if you want briefs and drafting too.
- Ten to forty pieces, small team: Surfer, Frase Professional, or Clearscope depending on whether you value toolkit breadth, workflow, or editor quality.
- Many writers and freelancers: Clearscope, because users are unlimited.
- Hundreds of pages and a topical authority problem: MarketMuse, usually alongside one of the editors.
- Already paying for Semrush or Ahrefs: check their built-in content tools first. Semrush's Content Toolkit Base is listed at $60/mo billed annually.
If budget is the main constraint, these are worth a look too: Rankability for agencies, Outranking for planning plus drafting, and Scalenut for speed-first AI drafts.
My recommendation
Solo or budget-bound: NeuronWriter, or Frase if you want research and drafting in the same tab. Quality-first and funded: Clearscope. Want the broadest toolkit around a score: Surfer. Strategy across a big site: MarketMuse. And whichever you pick, run a short trial on the same three keywords in two tools and compare what the suggestions miss, not what the score says. Browse more options in the wider software directory at surferstack.com.
One last caution. None of these tools will stop a thin or near-duplicate page from shipping. A perfect score on a duplicate page is still a duplicate page.
