Key takeaways
- Social citations differ wildly by engine. From Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms were 0.46% of ChatGPT citations, 2.7% of Perplexity's and 12.2% of Google AI Overviews', per Promptwatch Data.
- Older studies that crown Reddit as the top source are stale for ChatGPT. Reddit's share there fell from roughly 4% to 0.5% on August 14, 2026.
- A tool that only counts brand mentions is not enough. You want citation tracking at the URL level, split by platform and by engine.
- Promptwatch is the one I would test first if you want Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn tracking plus the content work that follows. Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly.AI and Scrunch are the other names worth a trial.
- Verify the social coverage on each vendor's site before paying. I have not confirmed URL-level Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn tracking for every tool below.
Why social citation tracking matters now
A year ago the advice was simple: get on Reddit, get on YouTube, done. That advice has aged badly, and the reason is exactly why you need a tool that tracks this stuff per engine.
Promptwatch's data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026 shows how uneven things have become. Averaged across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, YouTube takes 1.70% of citations, Reddit 1.03%, LinkedIn 0.90%, Facebook 0.81%, Instagram 0.56%, TikTok 0.07% and X 0.04%. But the average hides the story. Google AI Overviews pulls 12.2% of its citations from social platforms, about 26 times ChatGPT's share. YouTube alone is 4.28% there. In ChatGPT, LinkedIn is now the top social platform at a modest 0.3%. The full numbers are in the social media citations by AI model report.
Then there is the Reddit drop. Reddit held about 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7, then fell below 1% on Aug 14. The Aug 14-17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop, according to Promptwatch's Reddit citation report. The share started slipping on Aug 8, the day ChatGPT changed its query fan-out behavior (see the site: operator fan-out data). Promptwatch itself flags that a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out, so treat the size as provisional. AI Overviews eased from 2.37% to 2.10%, and AI Mode fell from 2.22% to 1.54%.
Compare that with the headline studies still circulating. Peec AI's analysis of 30 million sources found Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn at the top, and Bluefish told Adweek that YouTube appeared in 16% of LLM answers over six months against 10% for Reddit. Those are different methodologies and they predate the August shift. Useful context, not a current map.
The practical lesson: your tool has to show you platform share per engine, per day, so you can tell a real change from a collection glitch. Promptwatch's own advice from the data is to check the cited URLs before and after a sudden shift before you react.
What to look for in a Profound alternative
Profound is a strong enterprise monitoring product, and the tool catalog lists it as Profound for AI search visibility and analytics. People look elsewhere for the usual reasons: price, missing channels, or wanting the tool to help fix problems rather than only report them. For social citation tracking specifically, I would check these things.
- Per-platform citation reports. Not just "Reddit was mentioned" but which subreddit, which thread, which video, which channel, which LinkedIn post.
- LinkedIn page types. LinkedIn is not one thing. In August 2026, Pulse articles were 30.41% of LinkedIn citations and posts 27.75%, but ChatGPT leaned on company pages (33.68%) and Perplexity on posts (37.32%). See the LinkedIn citation page types report. A tool that lumps it all together hides that.
- Real interface data. Answers in the actual ChatGPT or AI Overviews UI can differ from API outputs.
- Your own channels. Can you filter to your own subreddit activity, YouTube channel or LinkedIn profile?
- Closing the loop. Does it tell you what to do, and whether it worked?
- Price per response. Social tracking means lots of prompts across several engines, and costs add up quickly.

The alternatives
Promptwatch
Promptwatch is where I would start, because social citation tracking is a core report rather than a footnote. It has dedicated views for the subreddits, videos, channels and LinkedIn posts that AI cites, and a "My channels" filter so you can see only your own accounts. Most competitors ignore those channels.

The bigger difference is what happens after you spot a gap. Promptwatch tracks real UIs (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Meta AI and more) rather than just APIs, which matters when engines behave as differently as the data above shows. Citation Trends classify every citation into 22 content types and 20 source types, with first-cited date and decay half-life per page. IP-verified AI crawler logs show whether bots can even read your pages. The Action Board turns findings into a prioritized to-do list, and the Content Agent can plan, write and publish to WordPress, Webflow or Framer, then track whether the new page got crawled, cited and clicked.
It is rated 4.7/5 on G2 and used by 1,840+ brands and agencies, and it is ISO/IEC 27001 certified, which helps with procurement. Pricing starts with a free Explore plan (ChatGPT only), then Essential at $95/month, Professional at $245 and Business at $579. Check promptwatch.com/pricing for current numbers. Agencies have their own tiers from $199/month, with white-label reporting.
The honest caveat: it is a lot of platform. If you only want a cheap weekly mention count, it is more than you need.
Peec AI
Peec AI publishes some of the most-quoted citation research, including the 30M-source analysis, and its product reports each prompt individually with sources. Research coverage suggests it extends monitoring to platforms such as YouTube, but confirm how deep the Reddit and LinkedIn views go before buying.
It is a monitoring tool. You will not get crawler logs, visitor analytics or content generation from it, so budget for other tools to do the fixing.
Ahrefs Brand Radar
Brand Radar tracks AI mentions alongside the offsite sources feeding AI answers, including YouTube and Reddit. That is useful context when your citations come from somewhere other than your own domain. If your team already lives in Ahrefs, the keyword and backlink data next to it is a real convenience.

The tradeoff is that it is an SEO suite adding AI tracking. Expect less AI-specific depth than a dedicated platform, and no content workflow for acting on what you find.
Otterly.AI
Otterly.AI is the budget pick. It monitors brand visibility across the main engines at a low entry price.

Good for a first look at where you stand. I would not rely on it alone for platform-level Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn analysis without checking what the plan includes.
Scrunch AI
Scrunch watches brand presence and audits how AI agents read your site, with page optimizations metered by plan. It is geared to brands and agencies.

It sits in the monitoring-plus camp. Social citation depth and pricing are worth comparing directly against the others on this list.
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit
If you already pay for Semrush, the AI Visibility Toolkit reports answer visibility inside the suite you know. Convenient, but prompt sets tend to be fixed and the AI-specific data shallower than a dedicated tracker.
Frase
Frase ranks itself first in its own Profound alternatives roundup, which is vendor-authored and should be read that way. Its real pitch is joining tracking with research, drafting and publishing. That is a sound idea if content production is your bottleneck.

AthenaHQ and others worth a look
AthenaHQ returns recommendations through an action center and has a Shopify publishing path. Other names from the catalog worth a trial if you want a wider field: Radarkit, Writesonic GEO, SE Ranking and Rankscale.
For a broader scan, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists far more options.
Match the platform to your engine
Because the engines differ so much, your priority list should too. Promptwatch's reading of the October 2026 data:
- Google AI Overviews: prioritize YouTube, then Facebook and Instagram.
- ChatGPT: do not count on Reddit threads. LinkedIn is its top social source, though small.
- Perplexity: publish on LinkedIn and Reddit, which tie at 0.86%.
- X: ignore it. Its peak is about 0.1%, on Perplexity.
That changes which tool you need. If most of your audience asks ChatGPT, social tracking is a minor line item and crawler logs and content citations matter more. Product pages were the most cited content type in ChatGPT at 22.4% (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), per the content type report. If your audience lives in Google, YouTube tracking jumps up the list.
How to test a tool before you commit
- Pick 20 prompts your buyers actually use, across informational and comparison intent.
- Run them in two or three tools for a week during the free trial or demo.
- Ask each tool one hard question: which YouTube videos and LinkedIn posts are cited for my category, and which are mine?
- Look for a sudden shift in the data and see whether the tool lets you compare cited URLs before and after.
- Check whether the tool tells you what to do next, and whether it can check afterwards that the fix worked.
If a vendor can't show URL-level Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn data in the demo, assume it does not have it.
Where to go from here
If you want one recommendation: trial Promptwatch first for the social reports and the action loop, add Peec AI or Ahrefs Brand Radar if you want a second opinion on the data, and keep Otterly.AI in mind if budget is the main constraint. For rank-tracking-focused options, the directory at ai-rank-tools.com is a good place to compare.
And whichever you choose, do not build a strategy on one study. The Reddit numbers moved by an order of magnitude in a single week of August. Track it yourself, per engine, and expect the next change.
