How to Check If Your Brand Is Cited on Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn Pages AI Trusts (2026)

AI engines cite different social platforms very differently. Here is how to check whether your brand shows up in Reddit threads, YouTube videos and LinkedIn pages that ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity pull from, using current 2026 data.

Key takeaways

  • The old claim that Reddit dominates AI citations is outdated for ChatGPT. In Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, Reddit was just 0.09% of ChatGPT citations, and all social platforms together were 0.46%.
  • Google AI Overviews is where social matters most: 12.2% of its citations come from social platforms, led by YouTube (4.28%), Reddit (2.15%) and LinkedIn (1.55%).
  • Perplexity splits its social citations between LinkedIn and Reddit (0.86% each), so it rewards presence on both.
  • Checking is a two-part job: find the exact threads, videos and posts AI cites for your prompts, then check whether your brand is named inside them.
  • Do it per engine. A single blended number hides the fact that each AI treats these platforms differently.

Why the old advice needs a refresh

If you read marketing posts from the past year, you saw the same line repeated: Reddit is the number one cited source, YouTube and Reddit beat your own website, and 62% of brands are absent from AI answers. Some of that was true when it was written. Profound's Reddit analysis from November 2025 looked at 4 billion citations and 300 million responses and found Reddit at the top.

Profound's research post on Reddit and AI search, dated November 2025

But AI search moves fast. Promptwatch's data shows reddit.com held a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026, then fell below 1% on Aug 14. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%. Promptwatch cautions that a data-collection issue can't be ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional. By the Sep 28 to Oct 4 window, Reddit was 0.09% of ChatGPT citations.

So before you spend a month seeding Reddit threads, check which engine you actually care about. The audit below is built around that.

What each engine cites right now

These numbers come from Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. Numbers shift week to week, so use them as a starting map, not a permanent rule.

PlatformChatGPTGoogle AI OverviewsPerplexity

Reddit0.09%2.15%0.86%
LinkedIn0.3% (top social platform)1.55%0.86%
Facebooklow2.38%n/a

Three things stand out. ChatGPT has nearly stopped citing social content, and LinkedIn is its most cited social platform at 0.3%. AI Overviews cites social about 26 times more than ChatGPT does. And Perplexity's YouTube share fell from 2.67% to 0.79%, which is a big swing in a short time. The full breakdown is in the Promptwatch social media citations report.

Step 1: Build a prompt list that reflects how buyers ask

You can't check citations in the abstract. You check them against prompts. Start with 30 to 50 questions:

  • Category questions: "best [category] tools for [use case]"
  • Comparison questions: "[your brand] vs [competitor]"
  • Problem questions: "how do I [job your product does]"
  • Brand questions: "is [your brand] worth it" and "[your brand] reviews"

Mix in the phrasing real people use on Reddit and in YouTube search, because AI engines run their own web searches behind each answer (query fan-outs). Promptwatch's fan-out data shows how many searches ChatGPT triggers per response, which is a reminder that one prompt can pull sources from several angles.

Tag each prompt by funnel stage. Commercial prompts and informational prompts surface very different source mixes, and you want to know which type your social presence helps with.

Step 2: Run the prompts in the real interfaces

The cheap way to start is manual. Open ChatGPT with search on, Google (for AI Overviews and AI Mode) and Perplexity, and paste in your top 10 prompts. For each answer, expand the sources and record:

  1. Which Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn URLs appear
  2. Whether your brand is named in the answer text
  3. Whether the cited social page names your brand at all
  4. Where the social source sits in the list

A simple spreadsheet works: prompt, engine, platform, URL, brand mentioned (yes/no), sentiment, competitor mentioned. Do this for each engine separately.

Manual checks have two problems. Answers vary between runs, so one look proves little. And UI answers can differ from API outputs, so checking through a script that calls a model API can mislead you about what real users see. That is why tools that capture the actual interface are worth the money once you go beyond a quick audit.

Step 3: Check Reddit citations

For each prompt where a Reddit URL is cited, ask three questions.

Is your brand in the thread?

Open the cited thread and search the page for your brand name and product names. Note whether you are mentioned by a customer, a competitor's fan, an employee or nobody. Profound's data found that positive brand sentiment is cited at 5% and negative at 6.1%, nearly identical, which suggests AI is looking for balanced evaluation rather than praise. A thread where people honestly criticize you may still get cited.

Which subreddits matter?

Group cited URLs by subreddit. You will usually see a handful of niche communities doing most of the work. Those are the ones to monitor, answer honestly in, and learn from.

What changed after Aug 14?

Promptwatch suggests comparing the Reddit URLs cited before and after Aug 14, 2026 to see which subreddits and topics lost out, tracking AI Overviews separately from ChatGPT, and using rolling trends instead of single-day comparisons. Follow that advice. A single bad day tells you nothing.

If you want to find relevant threads to join, tools built for Reddit engagement can help. ReddGrow focuses on B2B SaaS brands and Reddit citations, and CrowdReply positions itself around pages AI already trusts. Be careful with anything that automates replies: Reddit communities spot astroturfing quickly, and a deleted or downvoted comment does nothing for you.

A note on GummySearch: it was a popular Reddit research tool but closed in November 2025, so skip older tutorials that recommend it.

Step 4: Check YouTube citations

YouTube is the strongest social source in AI Overviews (4.28% of citations in Promptwatch's Sep 28 to Oct 4 window), so if Google matters to you, this is the first platform to audit.

For every cited video, record:

  • The channel (yours, a competitor's, a reviewer's, a creator's)
  • Whether the video title or description names your brand
  • Whether the transcript mentions you. AI systems read transcripts, so a spoken mention counts even when the title is silent
  • Video age. Old tutorials tend to keep getting cited if nothing newer replaces them

Then look at the gaps. If AI Overviews cites a competitor's "how to" video for a prompt you want, that is a content brief. Make a better, more specific video, put the key terms in the title, description and spoken script, and add a clean transcript.

Also check your own channel. Are the videos you already have being cited for any prompt? If not, the issue is usually topic mismatch rather than quality.

Step 5: Check LinkedIn citations

LinkedIn is the platform most people forget, and it behaves differently from Reddit or YouTube. In ChatGPT it is the top social source (0.3%), and on Perplexity it ties with Reddit at 0.86%.

The page type matters. From Promptwatch's LinkedIn citation page types report (Aug 1 to 31, 2026):

Page typeAll modelsChatGPTPerplexity
Pulse articles30.41%3.65%26.01%
Posts27.75%26.45%37.32%
Company pages18.05%33.68%22.03%
Job listingsn/a6.51%n/a

So when you audit, don't just ask "is LinkedIn cited." Ask which kind of LinkedIn page is cited and whether you have a strong version of it.

  • Company page: is the about section complete, with offerings, size and locations? ChatGPT leans on company pages heavily.
  • Posts: do you and your leaders publish standalone, quotable posts with numbers? Perplexity favors those.
  • Pulse articles: worth publishing for Google and Perplexity, but not for ChatGPT.
  • Top-content pages: AI Overviews gives these 5.15% of LinkedIn citations, the highest share of any engine, and they go to accounts LinkedIn ranks as leading voices on a topic.

Page types like showcase pages (0.4%), product pages (0.44%) and LinkedIn Learning (0.37%) barely register, so don't spend time there.

Step 6: Score what you found

Once you have the data, calculate a few numbers per engine:

  • Social citation coverage: of your tracked prompts, how many cite at least one Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn page?
  • Brand-in-source rate: of those cited social pages, what share name your brand?
  • Competitor gap: how many cited social pages name a competitor but not you?
  • Owned share: how many cited pages are on your own channels or profiles?

The brand-in-source rate is the one that most people skip and it is the most revealing. If AI cites social pages for your category and you are absent from all of them, that is a presence problem. If you are in them but not in the final answer, that is a prominence problem.

Step 7: Pick a tool if the manual process gets heavy

Manual checks are fine for a baseline. For ongoing tracking across engines, countries and hundreds of prompts, use a tool.

Promptwatch tracks Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citations in dedicated reports, including filters for your own channels, and shows them per AI engine from the real interfaces. It also layers crawler logs and visitor analytics so you can see whether cited pages bring traffic.

When you compare them, ask three questions. Does it capture the real UI or only API output? Does it break citations out by platform (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn) instead of lumping them as "other"? And does it help you act, or only report? For a wider list, the GEO software directory is a good place to browse.

Step 8: Act on the gaps, by engine

Promptwatch's recommendations from the October 2026 report are a sensible starting point:

  • For Google, put YouTube first, and keep public Facebook and Instagram profiles complete and active.
  • Don't rely on Reddit threads for ChatGPT visibility. Put that effort into your own site and the listicles, guides and comparisons ChatGPT cites. Product pages are the most cited type in ChatGPT at 22.4% of citations.
  • For Perplexity, publish on both LinkedIn and Reddit.
  • Leave X out of AI search plans. It peaks at about 0.1% on Perplexity.

There is a reasonable counterargument here: Reddit still shapes human opinion, and people read it directly. That's true, and it is a fine reason to take part in communities. Just don't tell your boss it is a ChatGPT visibility strategy right now.

A repeatable monthly routine

  1. Re-run your prompt list on all engines and log social URLs.
  2. Compare against last month: which Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn pages entered or dropped out?
  3. Update the brand-in-source rate and competitor gap.
  4. Choose two actions per engine, such as one video, one LinkedIn post series, one company page fix.
  5. Check again in four weeks. Content half-life varies a lot: Promptwatch's half-life data shows landing pages and docs stay cited longest while news loses half its pages within 36 days.

If you would rather hand the work to specialists, an agency like 1001 SEO Media runs GEO programs that include this kind of citation audit, but the routine above is doable in-house.

Common mistakes

  • Treating one run of a prompt as the truth. Answers vary, so repeat and look at trends.
  • Quoting 2025 statistics for 2026 decisions. The Reddit picture changed within months.
  • Counting a mention in the answer as the same thing as a citation of a page that names you. They are different signals.
  • Ignoring sentiment. A cited thread that trashes your product is still a source AI uses.
  • Faking engagement. Fake replies get removed and can hurt trust faster than silence.

Bottom line

The honest answer to "is my brand cited on pages AI trusts" is: it depends on the engine. In Promptwatch's Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026 data, YouTube leads for Google AI Overviews, LinkedIn leads for ChatGPT's small social share, and Perplexity splits between LinkedIn and Reddit. Build a prompt list, check the real interfaces, record which pages name you, and repeat monthly. Browse the Promptwatch Data hub for fresh numbers before you set your next quarter's plan.
