Key takeaways
- Promptwatch Data recorded Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations falling from a steady 3.83% (Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026) to 0.52% (Aug 14 to 17), an 86% relative drop.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode did not collapse. They eased gradually, so a tool that blends engines will hide the story.
- The drop persisted. By Sep 28 to Oct 4, Reddit was 0.09% of ChatGPT citations versus 2.15% in AI Overviews.
- Pick a tool by four features: per-engine tracking, URL-level citation views, daily granularity, and a way to see which domains replaced Reddit.
- Treat any single vendor's size of the drop as provisional. Three independent datasets agree on direction, not on exact numbers.
What actually happened on August 14
For weeks, Reddit sat at roughly 3.8% of ChatGPT Search citations, one of the largest shares of any single domain. Then it fell off a cliff. Promptwatch's report on Reddit citations dropping in ChatGPT (covering July 7 to Aug 17, 2026) shows the share starting to slide on August 8 and dropping below 1% on August 14. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%.
August 8 matters. That is the same day ChatGPT began using the site: operator at scale, which pushed it from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries (see the site: operator data). Nobody can prove the two events are connected. But the timing is hard to ignore.
Other sources saw the same thing. Semrush reported the 3.8% to 0.5% fall, and Otterly's study of 16 brand reports across unrelated industries found at least a 73% drop in ChatGPT's Reddit citations. Otterly's useful twist: ChatGPT's total citation volume rose 3.5% over the same window, so this was not a case of ChatGPT simply returning fewer citations. All 16 brands lost Reddit citations, and the American Red Cross, Udemy and Bayer went to zero.

Two caveats before you rebuild a strategy around this:
- Promptwatch itself calls the size of the drop provisional and says a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out. OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it doesn't set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.
- Different vendors use different prompt sets, so the numbers differ (73% vs 86%). That is normal. What matters is that they agree on direction.
The drop was ChatGPT-specific, and it stuck
The most useful finding for anyone shopping for a tool is that engines diverged. In Promptwatch's data, Reddit's share in Google AI Overviews eased from 2.37% to 2.10% (an 11% relative decline, no cliff). In AI Mode it went from 2.22% to 1.54%.
The follow-up, Promptwatch's October 2026 social media citations report (Sep 28 to Oct 4), shows how far the gap went:
| Engine | All social platforms | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | 0.09% | LinkedIn is top social platform at about 0.3% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | 2.15% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | 0.86% | LinkedIn ties Reddit at 0.86% |
That is a 26x difference in social citation share between AI Overviews and ChatGPT. If your tool reports one blended "AI visibility" number, you will miss this entirely. Reddit presence stopped paying off in ChatGPT and kept paying off elsewhere.
What to demand from a tool for this job
The research points to a short checklist. Skip any tool that fails more than one item.
- Per-engine tracking. ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity need to be separable, not averaged.
- Domain and URL-level citation views. You need to see which Reddit URLs were cited before and after Aug 14, and whether the loss hit broad swaths of Reddit or specific subreddits.
- Daily granularity. A weekly rollup would have smeared a four-day collapse.
- A replacement-source view. Otterly found the gap was filled by reference sources and official pages, not other forums. You want to see who took the share.
- Collection volume transparency. Because a data-collection change can mimic a citation drop, you need to compare response counts across the same dates.
- Real interface monitoring. User-facing ChatGPT answers can differ from API outputs, and API-only tools may miss a change in the search product.
The tools worth looking at
Promptwatch
Promptwatch is where the August data came from, and it maps most closely to the checklist above. It monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and others, with citation reports by domain and page, plus dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation tracking (including a "My channels" filter for your own accounts). Citation Trends classify each citation by content type and source type, so you can see what replaced Reddit rather than guessing. For the "was this my data or the engine?" question, its crawler logs and visitor analytics give you an independent signal on whether AI traffic to your site actually moved.

It also goes past monitoring. If Reddit was your route into ChatGPT answers, the content gap analysis, Action Board and Content Agent are aimed at the follow-up work: publishing your own pages for the prompts you lost. Check promptwatch.com/pricing for current plans; there is a free Explore tier limited to ChatGPT and 10 prompts, which is enough to test whether the tool fits.
Otterly.AI
Otterly published the most rigorous control study of the drop, carrying ChatGPT's total citation volume alongside the Reddit metric so the denominator was visible. That is the right instinct for anyone auditing their own data. As a product it is a lighter, lower-cost monitor, a reasonable choice if you mainly need brand and citation tracking per engine and don't need crawler-level or content workflow features.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit
Semrush covered the drop and pointed readers to its Prompt Research report for finding which prompts your audience uses. If your team already lives in Semrush, adding the toolkit keeps AI citation data next to keyword and site data. The tradeoff is that suite tools tend to use fixed prompt sets, so verify how much per-engine and URL-level detail you get before committing.
Ahrefs Brand Radar
Ahrefs Brand Radar suits teams that already use Ahrefs for backlinks and want a view of brand mentions across AI engines. Per the notes in one third-party roundup, deeper breakdowns are limited to higher-tier accounts, so confirm what your plan includes.

Profound and Scrunch AI
Both are strong monitoring platforms aimed at larger brands and agencies. They are worth a demo if you need enterprise reporting, but compare their cost per tracked response and ask specifically about Reddit and other social citation reporting.

Peec AI, Qwairy, AthenaHQ and Rankscale
This group covers prompt tracking at lower price points. They can tell you whether your brand is mentioned per engine. Whether they show cited URLs at the domain level, daily, is what you need to check, because that is the view that exposes a Reddit-style cliff.
Dageno AI and Surfer SEO's AI tracker
Both turn up in practitioner roundups. Dageno is described as strong on citation tracking across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and Surfer's tracker shows the snippets where you are cited or left out. They fit if you want light tracking attached to an existing content workflow.

Reddit-specific tools
ReddGrow focuses on Reddit engagement for B2B SaaS brands, and CrowdReply positions itself around getting cited on pages AI already trusts. After August, treat these with care: if your goal is ChatGPT citations specifically, the Promptwatch data says Reddit effort no longer pays there. They may still make sense for Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, where Reddit citations held up. GummySearch, a Reddit research tool, closed in November 2025.

Comparison table
Pricing and exact features change often. Verify on each vendor's site before buying; the table reflects positioning from the research, not a feature audit.

How to audit your own Reddit citation loss
Use the checks Promptwatch itself suggests before reacting, whatever tool you use.
- Check response and citation collection volume around August 14. If total responses collected dropped, part of your "loss" may be a measurement artifact. Otterly's control (total ChatGPT citations up 3.5%) is the model here.
- Compare the Reddit URLs cited before and after Aug 14. Did you lose broad Reddit coverage, or just a few subreddits and topics?
- Split engines. Track ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode separately. For AI Mode, use rolling trends rather than single-day comparisons.
- Look at who gained share. In Google, check which domains rose as Reddit declined. In ChatGPT, expect reference sources and official pages, and note that product pages are the most cited content type at 22.4% (content type report).
- Check your own traffic. Citation share is a proxy. Referral traffic from ChatGPT in your analytics tells you whether anything real changed for you.
What to do about it
Promptwatch's recommendations from the October data are blunt, and I think they are right:
- Stop counting on Reddit threads to get you into ChatGPT. Put that effort into your own site, plus listicles, guides and comparisons.
- For Google, invest in YouTube first, then keep public Facebook and Instagram profiles complete and active.
- For Perplexity, publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit.
- Skip X. It barely registers at 0.04% across the three engines.
One more point on volatility. This wasn't a gradual drift. A source that held 3.8% of citations for three weeks went to near zero in days, and Promptwatch Data shows ChatGPT's behavior shifting repeatedly this year, from the GPT-5.3 citation drop in March to the site: operator change in August. Any channel strategy that depends on one engine favoring one source type is fragile. Daily tracking is how you notice before your quarterly report does.
Which tool should you pick?
- You need to understand the shift and act on it: Promptwatch, because it tracks real interfaces per engine, shows Reddit and other social citations separately, and connects to content workflows.
- You mostly want inexpensive monitoring with solid methodology: Otterly.AI.
- You are already in an SEO suite: the Semrush toolkit or Ahrefs Brand Radar, after confirming per-engine and URL-level depth.
- You are enterprise or an agency with reporting needs: Profound or Scrunch, after a demo focused on social citation reporting.
Whatever you choose, test it against the checklist first. Ask the vendor to show you August 8 to August 17 for ChatGPT alone. If they can't, they can't show you the next shift either.
