Key takeaways
- You can build a working AI SEO stack for under $200 a month. A cheap AI visibility tracker, one content tool and a $20 AI assistant covers most small businesses.
- Headline prices mislead. Engine add-ons (Gemini, AI Mode, Claude), low prompt caps and credit-based billing push real costs higher on several trackers.
- Product pages, landing pages and listicles earn most ChatGPT citations. Fix your own pages before you buy more software.
- Agencies are mostly outside this budget. Loopex Digital starts around $1,500 a month, and hourly agencies charge $50 to $149 an hour.
- Treat vendor roundups with suspicion. Several of the best-known comparison lists are published by the tools they rank.
What "AI SEO" means for a small business in 2026
The phrase covers two different jobs, and people mix them up.
The first is classic SEO with AI help: keyword research, content briefs, drafts, on-page scoring, technical fixes. The second is AI search visibility, sometimes called GEO or AEO: finding out whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your business when someone asks a question you should win.
A small business usually needs a bit of both. But not equal amounts. If you have no content worth citing, tracking your AI visibility just gives you a precise measurement of nothing.
Adoption is already high. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce figures cited by Easy Design Solutions say 58% of small businesses used generative AI in 2025, up from 40% in 2024 and 23% in 2023. Your competitors are probably using it for something.

What actually gets a small business cited by AI
Before spending anything, look at what AI engines pull from. Promptwatch Data's report on ChatGPT citations by content type (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026) found that product pages are the most cited type at 22.4% of classified citations. Landing pages follow at 16.8%. So roughly 39% of citations go to pages describing what a company sells.
Listicles get 13.6%, how-tos 8.7%, comparisons 5.9% and news 5.7%.
For commercial prompts like "best CRM for small businesses", product pages take 26.0%, landing pages 20.6% and listicles 15.0%. Those types make up almost 70% of commercial citations.
This is good news if you run a small shop. Your service pages, pricing page and FAQ are the highest-value assets you own, and they cost nothing to improve. The same report suggests keeping pricing, specs and positioning complete on product pages, publishing comparison pages, adding an FAQ and collecting reviews on trusted sites.
Staying power matters too. Promptwatch's content half-life data shows news loses half its cited pages within about 36 days, while landing pages and docs stay cited for months. Evergreen pages beat news posts for a small team with limited writing time.
Budget stacks that fit under $200
These combinations are my own arithmetic from published list prices. Vendors change pricing often, so check their pricing pages before you buy.
| Stack | Parts | Approx. monthly cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lean tracking | Rankscale or Otterly Lite + ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro | $40 to $50 | Owners who want to see where they stand |
| Content-first | Surfer, Frase or Scalenut + an AI assistant | $70 to $120 | Businesses that publish regularly |
| One suite | Semrush One Starter or Search Atlas | $99 to $199 | People who want fewer logins |
| Mixed | Tracker + content tool + assistant | $100 to $170 | Small marketing teams |
AI visibility trackers under $200
These show whether AI engines mention you. Most are monitoring tools, so pair them with a plan for fixing what they find.
Rankscale
Essentials starts at $20 a month and is credit-based, Pro is $99 (10 dashboards) and Growth is $385. It tracks 17+ engines on every tier, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok. The catch is that credits can run out mid-month.
Otterly.AI
Lite is $29 a month for 15 tracked prompts across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. Standard jumps to $189 with no mid tier. Gemini, AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons, and lower tiers refresh weekly. Fifteen prompts is tight, but fine if you only care about your core services.

Peec AI, Qwairy and the cheap tier
Peec AI runs about 85 to 95 euros a month, though per Visby the self-serve plan covers only 3 of 7 engines. Qwairy is 59 euros, Mentions.so is $29, AIclicks is $39 and Writesonic GEO is $39 to $49.

A word on pricing sources
Most price lists for this category come from Otterly and Visby, who rank themselves. Profound is a good example: one roundup says it starts around $99, while Otterly's own comparison cites the Growth plan at $399. Treat any third-party price as a lead, not a fact.
Promptwatch for when you want to act, not just watch
If you are growing past the monitoring stage, Promptwatch is worth a look. The Essential plan is $95 a month and includes 50 prompts, all AI models, a site audit and content gap analysis, which puts it inside this budget. It also adds IP-verified AI crawler logs and visitor analytics, so you can see whether AI traffic turns into customers. Confirm current plans at promptwatch.com/pricing, and there is a free Explore tier to try first.

AI content and on-page tools
If your site is thin, spend here first. Prices below are billed annually where noted, from SearchBloom's September 2026 roundup.
| Tool | Starting price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Surfer SEO | $49/mo (Discovery), $99 Standard | AI Tracker add-on from about $119/mo |
| Frase | $49/mo Starter | Full features on every tier |
| Scalenut | $59/mo Starter | $199 Professional |
| Koala | From $25/mo | Cheap article drafts |
| Rankability | $99/mo Starter | $199 Core |
| Clearscope | $129/mo Essentials | Strong, but pricey for a solo owner |
| Jasper | $69/mo Pro | Better for marketing copy than SEO |

My view: Frase or Scalenut is the easiest pick for a first content tool, because pricing is clear and you get full features without upsells. Surfer is excellent but its AI tracker is an add-on that quickly eats your headroom.
All-in-one suites
Semrush
The SEO plan is $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually). Semrush One "SEO + AI Search" Starter is $199 ($165.17 annually). The standalone AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month per domain and needs a paid base plan, so the real cost lands around $199 to $239. That is right at the edge of your budget.
Search Atlas
Starter is $99 a month and Growth is $199. Its OTTO agent applies on-page and technical fixes and is included. For a small business without an in-house SEO person, that is the closest thing here to hands-off.

Ahrefs and SE Ranking
Ahrefs Lite is $129 and Standard is $249. Brand Radar starts from $199, and one roundup says that is per engine, so check carefully. SE Ranking Core is $129 and Growth $279, with an AI Search add-on of $89 for existing customers.

Over budget
Alli AI at $249 and AirOps (Solo around $200, with a tenfold jump to Pro) both land past the line. Skip them unless you have a specific reason.
Cheap AI assistants do a lot of the work
Before you pay for a specialized tool, check what a general assistant already covers.
| Assistant | Paid tier |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 |
| Claude | Pro $20 ($17 annually), Max from $100 |
| Gemini | AI Plus $4.99, AI Pro $19.99 |
| Perplexity | Pro $20 |
Easy Design Solutions notes that most useful business AI tools now cost $8 to $25 per person per month, and that ChatGPT connects to 16 small business apps including Canva, Stripe, Wix and HoneyBook (HoneyBook was added September 9, 2026). If your invoices and bookings already live in those, the assistant may be your best-value tool.
Free options worth using first
- HubSpot AI Search Grader: a free one-time diagnostic across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
- Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, which cost nothing and show how your pages perform.
- Promptwatch's Free AI Visibility Report, a no-login scan.
I did not test these against paid options, so treat them as a starting baseline.
What about hiring an agency?
Probably not at this budget. The Loopex Digital roundup says to think twice if you need help under $1,500 a month. Hourly agencies listed by SeoProfy run $50 to $99 an hour (Delante, Boostability), $80 (SeoProfy itself) and $100 to $149 (Siege Media). Ten hours of work blows past $200 fast.

If you later want senior help on technical SEO, content and AI search together, agencies like 1001 SEO Media exist for that, with no long-term contracts. But under $200 a month, software is the right call.
Pitfalls to watch for
- Engine add-ons. Otterly's Gemini, AI Mode and Claude coverage costs extra, from $9 to $439 a month depending on plan.
- Low prompt caps. 15 prompts is a handful of questions, not a market.
- Credit-based billing. Rankscale credits can run out.
- Per-domain and per-seat charges, like Semrush's AI toolkit.
- Accuracy. I found no independent testing of tracker accuracy, so use trends over single numbers.
- Annual lock-in. Try a monthly or free plan with real data before you commit to a year.
A simple way to decide
- Start with free tools and an AI assistant. Audit your service pages, pricing, FAQ and reviews.
- Add a $20 to $50 tracker once you have pages worth tracking, and pick 10 to 15 prompts that match real customer questions.
- Add one content tool when you can publish at least two pages a month.
- Move to a suite or a platform like Search Atlas or Promptwatch only when you are juggling three subscriptions and want one view.
For more options by category, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists dozens of trackers, and surferstack.com covers general SEO software.
Bottom line
Spend your first $50 on a tracker and an assistant, your next $50 on a content tool, and keep the rest as a buffer for add-ons. The product and landing pages on your own site matter more than any dashboard. Fix those, then measure.
