Key takeaways
- Entry plans for AI visibility trackers run from about $29 to $400 a month. Tools that also write and publish content generally cost more once you get past the starter tier.
- Agencies mostly sell AI search optimization as an add-on. GoodFirms puts the typical price at $900 or more a month; SE Ranking's 2024 respondents averaged $937.
- Prices from different sources disagree. Check vendor pages before you budget; the figures below come from third-party roundups read in October 2026.
- Cost per prompt tracked is a better yardstick than the headline monthly price. A $29 plan with 15 prompts is not cheaper than a $95 plan with 50.
- AI has not made SEO cheaper so far. GoodFirms found 54.3% of agencies raised prices in 2025-2026, and 37% of them named AI search services as the main reason.
Why a single price for AI SEO does not exist
Search around for "how much does AI SEO cost" and you will find answers from $299 a month to $50,000 a month. Both are real. They describe different things.
An "AI SEO solution" can mean at least four products:
- A visibility tracker that shows whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews mention your brand.
- A content optimization tool that scores drafts against search results.
- An autopilot writer that produces and publishes articles.
- A human agency that does GEO/AEO work and uses tools to report on it.
Mixing these up is the main reason quotes look inconsistent. A $29 tracker and a $5,000 agency retainer are not competing for the same budget line. So the benchmarks below are split by product type, and you should decide which one you are actually buying first.
One caveat on everything that follows. I did not open every vendor's pricing page. Figures come from third-party roundups (IndustryLens, Semrush's blog, Agenzy, Zapier, SE Ranking) checked in early October 2026, and they conflict in places. Treat them as a map, not a quote.
The agency baseline: what humans charge
Before comparing software, it helps to know what the alternative costs. Provider surveys are the best evidence available, though they show asking prices, not what buyers actually pay.
| Source | Finding |
|---|---|
| Ahrefs (439 providers) | Average $2,917/month; $111/hour average, 90% at $150 or less |
| SE Ranking (260 agencies, 2024) | 64% charge under $1,000/month; 2% more than $5,000 |
| GoodFirms (300+ agencies, Apr-May 2026) | 48% charge $1,500-$5,000; 43.3% under $1,500; 5.5% above $5,000 |
| Clutch | Average $3,199/month from client reviews |
| GoodFirms, AI search add-on | $900+/month standalone; about $2,500 at enterprise tier |
| Young Company | Mid-market AIO/GEO retainers $2,000-$8,000/month; enterprise $10,000-$25,000+ |

Two things stand out. First, the commonly quoted "$3,500 median retainer" does not appear in any of the surveys checked. Second, nobody has measured a price cut from AI. If a vendor tells you AI made SEO 30% cheaper, ask for the data.
Agencies that want to be paid for GEO should also show you what they track. GoodFirms found 60.6% of agencies struggle to measure ROI on AI services, so ask to see reporting before paying for it. If you are weighing an agency, 1001 SEO Media is one example of a shop that sells GEO work with monthly reporting and no long-term contracts, and the same questions apply to any provider.
Tier one: AI visibility trackers (about $29 to $400 a month)
These tools run a set of prompts against AI engines and report whether your brand appears. They are the cheapest category and the most crowded. Entry prices below come from IndustryLens (checked 2 Oct 2026), Semrush's blog, Agenzy and Zapier.
| Tool | Entry price | What the entry plan covers |
|---|---|---|
| Rankscale | $20/mo (annual only); $99 monthly Pro | Basic tracking |
| Otterly.AI | $29/mo Lite | 15 prompts; Standard $189 (100), Premium $489 (400) |
| ZipTie | From about $36/mo | Focused tracking |
| Knowatoa | $59/mo | Brand monitoring |
| LLMrefs | $79/mo | 500 prompts |
| Peec AI | About $85-95/mo | 50 prompts; Pro $245 (150), Advanced $495 (350) |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo per domain; Semrush One from $199 | Capped at around 25-50 prompts |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | From $199/mo standalone | Prompt packages from about $50/mo extra |
| Scrunch AI | $250/mo | 125 prompts, annual billing |
| AthenaHQ | $245-295/mo | Agency/enterprise leaning |
| Goodie AI | $399/mo | AEO monitoring and optimization |
| Evertune | $800/mo Pro | Analysis at scale |

Profound is the awkward one. Semrush and Agenzy still list a $99 Starter (ChatGPT only, 50 prompts) and a $399 Growth plan (3 engines, 100 prompts). IndustryLens reports Profound pulled the $99 tier from its public page in October 2026, leaving a free trial and a custom Enterprise plan. Check the vendor page.
Cost per prompt is the number to compute
Agenzy, which is a Peec AI partner and therefore not neutral, calculated cost per prompt per engine per day. The ordering is still useful:
| Plan | Cost per prompt per engine per day |
|---|---|
| Otterly Premium | $0.0102 |
| Peec AI Advanced | $0.0157 |
| Otterly Lite | $0.0161 |
| Peec AI Starter | $0.0211 |
| Profound Starter | $0.0660 (ChatGPT only) |
The lesson: a low sticker price on a small plan can cost more per data point than a mid-tier plan. Also check engine coverage. Otterly does not track Gemini or AI Mode, per Agenzy. Coverage matters because AI engines cite different numbers of sources. Promptwatch Data's average sources per response report shows ChatGPT citing about 5 sources per web-search answer, while Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite about 10. A tool covering only ChatGPT sees a narrower slice of the citation field.
Also confirm whether the tool reads the real user interface or an API. Answers can differ between the two.
Tier two: platforms that also help you act
Monitoring tells you that you are missing. It does not fix anything. The next tier adds content gap analysis, crawler data, content generation or publishing, and prices climb accordingly.
Promptwatch sits here, and its published pricing is useful as a reference point because it is stated plainly: Essential is $95/mo (50 prompts, all AI models, site audit, content gap analysis), Professional is $245/mo (150 prompts, 5 AEO articles, Knowledge Base), and Business is $579/mo (350 prompts, the automated Content Agent, state and city tracking, Ads Radar). Agency plans run $199 to $799/mo, and there is a free Explore tier with 10 prompts on ChatGPT only. Annual billing gives 12 months for the price of 10. Confirm at promptwatch.com/pricing.

The sticker price needs context. At $95 you are in the same band as Peec AI Starter ($95) and above Otterly Lite, but the plan includes IP-verified crawler data options, visitor analytics and a content workflow that trackers do not have. At $579 you are paying for execution, not just measurement. Whether that is worth it depends on whether you have someone to do the writing otherwise.
Other tools in this class from the catalog include:
- Search Atlas, with plans listed by SE Ranking at $99 (Starter), $199 (Growth), $399 (Pro) and $999 (Agency) a month.
- SE Ranking, listed from $119/mo for its AI SEO suite, and a separate SE Ranking Visible product for AI tracking.
- Petra Labs, which Zapier lists at custom pricing from $15,000/mo, the top of the range.
- Similarweb AI Brand Visibility, Yext Scout and Brandlight, which sit at "by request" or no public price.

Yext Scout

When a vendor will not publish a price, assume enterprise contract territory and budget at the high end of the agency ranges above. That is a guess, not a data point, but it matches how these quotes tend to land.
Tier three: content optimization and AI writers
Many "AI SEO" budgets actually go here. These tools do not measure AI visibility; they help produce pages. The listed prices from SE Ranking, Stackmatix and GoodFirms:
| Tool | Listed starting price |
|---|---|
| SEO.AI | $49/mo |
| Jasper | $49/mo |
| Frase | $45/mo |
| Surfer SEO | $79-99/mo |
| MarketMuse | $99-149/mo |
| Clearscope | $129-189/mo (sources differ) |
| Semrush | $139.95/mo (Pro) |
| Ahrefs | $29 Starter; $129 Lite is the common agency choice |

Stackmatix says most businesses spend $200 to $500 a month on AI SEO tools when optimizing in-house. That seems right to me for a small team running one content optimizer and one tracker.
Autopilot services: the cheap end
Aira sells an AI SEO service at $299 (30 articles), $599 (60 articles) and $999 (unlimited, 3 sites) a month, with no contracts. Its own comparison claims it costs 80 to 90% less than an agency. That is a vendor claim, and the comparison is volume of articles against agency output; it does not address whether those articles earn citations.

I would be cautious here. Google's July 2026 guidance on AI features says tricks like chunking content for AI and llms.txt files can be ignored, and mass-produced content without editorial review is a liability, as GoodFirms puts it. High volume at low cost is only a deal if the pages are good.
A quick budget guide by situation
| Situation | Reasonable monthly budget | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Solo founder testing the waters | $0-$100 | Free tiers, one tracker with 15-50 prompts |
| Small business, in-house marketer | $100-$500 | One tracker plus one content optimizer |
| Growing team that needs execution | $250-$600 | A platform with content workflow and site audit |
| Agency serving several clients | $200-$800+ | Agency plan with unlimited projects, white-label reports |
| Mid-market brand outsourcing | $2,000-$8,000 | Agency GEO retainer, with its tooling included |
| Enterprise, regulated or competitive | $10,000-$25,000+ | Enterprise platform plus senior agency |
These are my synthesis of the sources above, not a published standard.
Red flags when reading a quote
- A price with no prompt count or engine list. Ask what is covered.
- An AI add-on at $900+ that cannot show you its reporting. GoodFirms found measuring AI ROI is the top challenge for agencies, so ask what they will actually measure.
- Guaranteed rankings or citations. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and no one can guarantee a citation either.
- Annual-only pricing presented as monthly. Rankscale's $20 is annual billing only.
- Price lists that quote a different number from the vendor's own page. Several do, so verify directly.
How to compare two quotes
- Convert every quote to a monthly figure on the same billing basis.
- Divide by tracked prompts and engines to get a cost per data point.
- List what is included: crawler logs, content generation, publishing, reports.
- Ask what happens at the cap. Many plans charge extra for more prompts or checks, like Ahrefs Brand Radar's add-on packages.
- Put a review date in your calendar. Ownership and pricing are moving: Semrush is now owned by Adobe, and Scrunch has been acquired, according to the sources reviewed.
For more options by category, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com and the AI rank tracker listings at ai-rank-tools.com are good places to cross-check prices.
Bottom line
The honest 2026 answer: $29 to $400 a month buys you measurement. Around $100 to $600 buys measurement plus some help acting on it. $900 and up is where agency AI add-ons start. Past $2,000 you are paying for people. Pay for the layer you will actually use, and recheck the vendor's own page before you commit.
